After Cody Bellinger snapped a 4-4 tie with a three-run homer in the top of the fifth, the bottom of the inning began with two quick outs. But Clayton Kershaw walked George Springer and Alex Bregman in succession, leading to his exit. As Kenta Maeda took the mound to face Altuve, fans at Minute Maid Park began serenading their superstar second baseman with chants of “M-V-P! M-V-P!”
Clearly swinging for the fences, Altuve ran the count full, then narrowly missed a homer with a deep foul ball down the left-field line. Altuve’s next swing sent center fielder Chris Taylor to the warning track, where Taylor could only watch as the ball sailed over the fence for a game-tying homer.
Altuve also hit a go-ahead home run in the 10th inning of Game 2, which the Astros ultimately won in the 11th.
